Masters in Conservation Leadership

The Cambridge Master's in Conservation Leadership programme recently organised a visit to the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) headquarters in Thetford, reinforcing our long-standing partnership with one of the UK's most respected conservation organisations.

About the British Trust for Ornithology

The BTO is an independent charitable research institute combining professional and citizen science. Since 1933, they have been working to understand birds and, more recently, other wildlife, delivering impartial evidence to inform policy decisions that impact our environment. Through their network of over 60,000 volunteer birdwatchers, the BTO collects vital data about Britain's birds, their breeding, migration patterns, and survival rates.

Strengthening Conservation Leadership Through Partnership

The BTO is a crucial partner organisation within the Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI) and plays a significant role in our Master's programme.

Dr Juliet Vickery, Chief Executive Officer of BTO, delivered an inspiring presentation to our students on how scientific research underpins effective conservation decision-making. Dr Vickery, who brings decades of experience in conservation science, shared valuable insights into BTO's research methodologies and their practical applications in addressing current biodiversity challenges.

Hands-on Learning Experience

A highlight of the visit was the demonstration of bird ringing techniques, a fundamental research tool that has contributed significantly to our understanding of bird populations, migration patterns, and survival rates. BTO staff members shared their expertise and demonstrated how this scientific practice continues to inform conservation strategies across the UK and internationally.

The Value of Partnership

The BTO's contribution to our Master's programme extends beyond field visits. As one of our partner organisations within the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, they regularly:

  • Provide guest lectures and workshops
  • Offer placement opportunities for students
  • Share real-world case studies
  • Host consultancy projects
