Boris Bozic from 2023-24 year completed his professional placement with UNEP-WCMC, focusing on supporting the private sector in designing nature-positive renewable energy developments. This placement provided Boris with invaluable insights into the complexities of driving the nature-positive agenda in the renewable energy sector.
Boris's work centered on tackling "wicked problems" – complex, interconnected challenges that require innovative approaches. He engaged with diverse stakeholders, balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability, and worked to inspire systemic change in the renewable energy sector.
"Leadership in driving the nature-positive agenda is not just about having the right strategy—it's about navigating complex, dynamic challenges with resilience and vision," Boris reflected. His experience highlighted the need for an adaptive mindset, the courage to embrace ambiguity, and the ability to mobilize collective action across institutions.
Academic Insights
Boris Bozic reflects on the academic underpinnings of his placement with UNEP-WCMC:
"My project on supporting nature-positive renewable energy developments was significantly enriched by the academic resources I engaged with during my placement. The work of the Oxford Nature Positive Hub, particularly a paper by zu Ermgassen et al. (2022), was instrumental in shaping my understanding of corporate biodiversity commitments. This research provided a critical framework for my interactions with the renewable energy sector.
A study by White et al. (2023) on business-biodiversity action offered practical insights that were directly applicable to my project. It was particularly inspiring to work with research conducted by a Cambridge alumnus, showcasing the ongoing impact of the university's conservation work.
To gain a deeper understanding of the political dimensions of conservation work, I studied 'Political Ecology: A Critical Introduction' by Robbins (2019). This text provided crucial insights into the power dynamics that shape conservation efforts, improving my ability to navigate complex stakeholder relationships.
The integration of these diverse academic perspectives allowed me to approach my placement with a well-informed, multidisciplinary viewpoint. I found myself applying theoretical concepts to real-world challenges, which significantly enhanced the depth and impact of my work with UNEP-WCMC"
Boris's work garnered attention within the conservation community. He was invited to share his reflections on the concept of being nature-positive with CCI Director Melissa Leach.
